A report in the Tagesanzeiger of May 8, 2025 reports that Swiss farmers are producing “original milk” and asks whether this is better milk or just marketing hype. Our letter to the editor was published yesterday:
It is incomprehensible that the dairy industry is now doing everything it can to keep milk consumption high, even with A2-gene type milk. After all, it could increasingly invest in plant-based milks. Because more and more people are becoming aware that milk is completely unnatural for children and adults who are breastfed. Especially when this milk also comes from another animal species. And above all, the product causes suffering cows that are slaughtered while still young due to a declining milk flow. And suffering calves, which on the one hand are needed every year to ensure that the cow always produces enough milk and on the other – especially if they are male – are killed as surplus and disposed of. Let’s finally give up milk consumption if it is so painful and at the same time not at all necessary for survival. We would have a choice. The cows and calves don’t.
